Mecklenburg County Tourism Receives Virginia Tourism Corporation Grant for Tourism Marketing
Posted on:  8/28/2013  by Blog Admin

Governor Bob McDonnell announced that Mecklenburg County Tourism received $5,000 from the Virginia Tourism Corporation Marketing Leverage Grant Fund program. Governor McDonnell had earlier increased funding for the program as part of his administration’s efforts to increase economic development through tourism. In total VTC awarded more than $980,000 for 54 tourism marketing projects across the state to help increase visitation and revenue for Virginia’s localities through tourism.

Mecklenburg County’s Tourism Office received a $5,000 grant for its county tourism branding development & training effort. Mecklenburg County partnered with Virginia Community Capital and Conrad USA (owners of the Lake Motel and Best Western in Clarksville) to generate a combined total of $10,000 in matching funds for the project, which will focus on laying the groundwork for the quickly growing county-wide tourism effort.  The funds will be used for a variety of critical functions, including developing and implementing a recurring tourism training program for front-line employees of tourism-related businesses, which will help answer the commonly asked question "So, what is there to do around here?”  In addition, the funds will be used to create high-quality in-room marketing pieces to educate overnight guests on the many attractions and shopping opportunities throughout the county, as well as secure a number of signature professional photographs to implement in future marketing efforts.

"This is a great boost for us to get the right pieces in place as we continue to solidify our tourism brand and start reaching out to a broader market of visitors,” said Justin Kerns, Tourism Coordinator for Mecklenburg County.  "Having the support of the Virginia Tourism Corporation and our local partners as we gear up our exciting program is a vital key to our success, and we’re incredibly thankful for everyone’s ongoing support.  Being a new tourism program with a relatively small budget, we have to work very hard to stretch every dollar and ultimately convert that into more visitors coming and spending their money throughout Mecklenburg County.  We plan to get a lot of mileage out of this grant.”

The VTC Marketing Leverage Program is designed to stimulate new tourism marketing through partnerships by leveraging limited marketing dollars, resulting in increased visitor spending.  A minimum of three entities must partner financially to apply and may consist of Virginia towns, cities, counties, convention and visitors bureaus, chambers of commerce, other local or regional destination marketing organizations, private businesses, museums, attractions, cultural events, and other not-for-profit entities.

"Grants such as these enable our localities to more effectively market themselves to potential visitors,” said Governor McDonnell. "When more visitors come to Virginia, the localities and the Commonwealth realize increased tax revenue, businesses prosper, and new jobs are created.”

"Local tourism efforts get a gigantic boost when parties work together in partnership,” said Rita McClenny, President and CEO of the Virginia Tourism Corporation. "By leveraging our tourism marketing funds so much good can be accomplished that results in dynamic tourism projects that might otherwise be unaffordable.”

Tourism in Virginia generates $20 billion in revenue, supports more than 207,000 jobs and provides $1.3 billion in state and local taxes.
