Fire, Police and Rescue

Fire protection is provided in each of the five towns by volunteer fire departments. South Hill has a fire insurance rating of Class 5, Chase City rates Class 6, La Crosse rates Class 6, and Clarksville is rated Class 8. Equipped For Safety
Fire service is provided to industry beyond corporate limits and in the rural areas of the county by 5 additional volunteer fire companies located throughout the county.

The county sheriff's department employs 30 officers, including investigators. South Hill, Chase City, and Clarksville all have individual police departments. There are 13 state police assigned to the area.

Emergency rescue service is provided countywide by four Rescue Squads located in Boydton, Chase City, Clarksville, and South Hill.
Chase City Rescue Squad, Inc., has 25 members (all volunteers), two certified paramedics, advanced life support equipment, and telemetry devices.
