A dog license
All dogs four months or older must have a Mecklenburg County dog tag. Dog tags go on sale November 1st. The deadline to purchase dog tags is January 31. For each dog tag, proof of current rabies vaccination must be presented. The current price for each dog tag is $5.00; 20-dog kennel tags are $35.00; 50-dog kennel tags are $50.00 and duplicates are $1.00. Failure to purchase a dog tag in a timely manner could result in a summons being issued to the owner by the Mecklenburg County Animal Warden. If found in violation, the owner could be fined $25.00 per dog plus incur cost of court .

Dog tags may be purchased by mail or in person at the Treasurer’s Office at 311 Washington Street, Boydton. When purchasing by mail, dog owners must send a copy of a current rabies vaccination certificate for each dog as well as the applicable fee. Checks or money orders are to be made to the County of Mecklenburg. Once received, purchased dog tags will be mailed back to the dog owner.

Married
  • Marriage licenses are issued from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday by the Clerk of Circuit Court.
  • Licenses are issued regardless of the applicants' county of residence as long as the marriage will take place in Virginia.
  • The marriage license fee is $30.00. Payment may be made by cash, check or money order. Debit and credit cards are not accepted.
  • Both parties, bride and groom, must be present and must present a photo I.D. If either party is under 18, please contact the Clerk’s Office at 434-738-6191 ext. 4220 for additional information.
  • Blood tests are not required.

A phone number for a department
To get a phone number and/or extension for a County Department, click on County Directory under Government or Quick Links on the website’s Home Page or you may dial 434-738-6191 (from South Hill dial 434-447-7636) and press “0” to speak to the operator.

911 address
To have a 911 address assigned to your property you must have a residence on that property; we do not address “property”. If you are moving into an existing residence and you do not know your 911 address, call the E911 Communications Center’s non-emergency number at 434-738-0029.

If you plan to build a house, put up a doublewide, singlewide or modular, you must first apply for a building permit. Once the foundation is started and inspected, the GIS Technician from the 911 Center automatically gets that information and will come out to measure and create your address. He will then mail that information to the mailing address that you provided on your building permit. You do not have to do anything extra to get an address assigned to your new home.

Tax maps & Real Estate Assessments
To view tax maps and real estate assessments, you can access the GIS website at http://gis.edsi.com/mecklenburgmain.php or you may call the Real Estate office at 434-738-6191 (from South Hill dial 434-447-7636) ext. 4270.

Building Code Certificate of Occupancy
  • Final Inspection must be “passed” by a building inspector.  For more information on final inspection requirements, see http://mecklenburgva.com/mediaarchive/pdf/Required%20Inspections.pdf
  • Health Department Operational Permits for waste disposal system and/ or private well must be approved and a copy provided to the Building Code Enforcement office.
  • A CO will be mailed within five (5) days of the passed final inspection provided the Health Department operational permit has been provided.  Owners may pick up the CO in person if desired.  For more information, you may contact our permit technician at (434) 738-6191 (ext. 4331) or by email at building.codeenforcement@mecklenburgva.com .
Note:  The “Passed” final inspection shall serve as a new CO for additions or alterations to     existing buildings which already have a Certificate of Occupancy.
