Canoeing and Kayaking
Canoeing and Kayaking in Mecklenburg County
The popularity of canoeing and kayaking is growing quickly, and Mecklenburg County offers plenty of untapped, absolutely breathtaking exploration for paddlers of all ages!
Our primary bodies of water for paddling are:
The Meherrin River (a designated Virginia Scenic River), with a free public access point and launch located at Whittle's Mill (map)
Kerr Lake (50,000 acre lake with 850 miles of mostly undeveloped shoreline, also referred to locally as "Buggs Island Lake")
Lake Gaston (35,000 acre lake, which is more developed and busier than Kerr, however the Tailrace below Kerr is technically Upper Lake Gaston, and offers excellent paddling and access points)
Lake Gordon (a small DGIF lake designated for fishing, but also offers very quiet paddling opportunities)
Our regional paddling and outdoor recreation organization, Upper Reach, has great maps, a trail wiki, and interpretive signs to guide visiting paddlers.
