Facebook Mystery Shots

Welcome to our Facebook Mystery Shot Hall of Fame!

This program started out with just one picture, but as popularity grew and the true depth of hidden history in Mecklenburg County became apparent, the now-weekly mystery shot has a great following and some fun stories have emerged that we otherwise would have never found out.

Below is the chronologic list of shots, with name, location and historic significance:

Sydnor Cabin Mecklenburg
Parker Sydnor Cabin near Clarksville (map).  Posted April 15, 2013.  The property, once a part of the sprawling Prestwould Plantation near Clarksville, was purchased by Lovice "Vicey” Skipwith, a woman and a formerly enslaved worker, in 1888. It’s best known as the home of the tombstone carver Parker Sydnor.  For more info check out this article.  Image property of Mecklenburg County Tourism Office.

Original Randolph Macon College
Randolph-Macon College Campus near Boydton (map).  Posted April 19, 2013.  This is the original site of Randolph-Macon College, now located in Ashland, VA (just North of Richmond).  Originally built around 1832, this building has a long and fascinating history.  Unfortunately, the massive roof came down several years ago and the building is unsafe, but the Old Brunswick Circuit Foundation now owns it and is attempting to stabilize and save the building.  Another interesting fact about this is that the college was built on top of what is believed to be the first oval horse track in the United States.  For more info check out this website.  Image property of Mecklenburg County Tourism Office.
